Correction facilities share a common problem with inmates making outgoing phone calls. Methods such as providing inmates with pin numbers or passwords have been compromised with inmates loaning, selling or stealing these security keys from other inmates. The problem surfaces when these calls made by the inmate get disputed. The telecommunication company loses approximately 30% of this revenue due to the disputed calls.

AirGATE Technologies, Inc. has developed a solution for a customer that will save this customer lost revenue due to dispute phone calls. The concept consists of an inmate wearing a wrist band that contains a RFID device and an AirGATE Technologies, Inc. reader. The inmate will wave his wrist band over a section of the phone where a concealed reader has been installed. The unique information from the RFID tag is read and enables the use of the phone. This technique provides this customer with the exact information of the call. This solution can also provide the correction facility a method of tracking inmate’s location, accounts along with controlling inmate’s privileges.   The wrist band becomes inoperative once removed from the inmate’s wrist along with all privileges that require this device.

With over 23 million calls made per month and losing 30% of the revenue, even if each call was only ten cents each would result in nearly $700K lost per month or $8.5 million a year. This may only be the tip of the iceberg, considering the other savings in monitoring and managing inmates and resources.

Innovated solutions similar to the above product are representative of how AirGATE Technologies, Inc.  partners with customers to implement RFID technology. The details of Prison phone project and how this technology can be implemented with your ideas will be announced in the coming 2007 RFID World Expo in Dallas , Texas . If your business requires true authentication, please give us a call at any time to discuss your application (947-747-0051).
